Green Star is Australia’s national sustainability rating system for buildings, interiors and communities. Developed by the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA), it provides a structured way to assess how environmentally responsible, healthy and efficient a building is across its full design, construction and operational life.
Unlike single-issue certifications, Green Star takes a multi-criteria approach, looking at everything from energy and carbon to materials, indoor environment quality and governance.
Projects are independently reviewed against a detailed technical manual, making Green Star more rigorous than disclosure-only schemes. However, unless paired with post-occupancy measurement (e.g. NABERS), it remains largely design- and documentation-based rather than outcome-proven.
What it measures
Green Star assesses buildings across a broad set of sustainability categories, with credits contributing to an overall rating.
It measures:
Energy: Operational energy efficiency, peak demand reduction and transition readiness
Carbon: Operational carbon emissions and, increasingly, embodied carbon impacts
Materials: Responsible sourcing, lifecycle impacts, durability and transparency
Health: Indoor environment quality, including air quality, daylight, acoustics and comfort
Water: Water efficiency, reduction and management strategies
Waste & circularity: Construction waste reduction, reuse and material recovery pathways
Transport & place: Access to public transport, active travel and site connectivity
Governance & process: Integrated design, commissioning, performance tracking and accountability
What it doesn't measure
Despite its breadth, Green Star has clear boundaries.
It does not:
Certify individual products or materials in isolation
Guarantee actual operational performance (unless paired with ongoing measurement)
Replace detailed lifecycle assessment for materials
Ensure regenerative or net-positive outcomes by default
Address social equity or labour practices beyond defined credits
A Green Star rating reflects design intent and documented compliance, but not necessarily automatic real-world outcomes.

Green Star is primarily used by:

Geographic relevance
Australia-focused: Tailored to Australian climate conditions, construction practices and regulations
Internationally recognised: Often referenced alongside LEED and BREEAM, but not directly comparable
Climate-responsive: Performance expectations vary by location and building type
Green Star ratings cannot be transferred overseas, but they carry credibility internationally.
