Now in its ninth year, the 2026 Melbourne Design Week program feels like it’s hitting the tipping point as it broadens the conversation around regenerative design and circularity.
More than thirty events in the line-up engage directly with bio-materials, mycelium, recycling, circularity, waste-as-resource, adaptive reuse, or regeneration. Here we’ve pulled together a list, grouped by the themes we’re taking notice of.

Bio-materials move from object to system
The bio-materials programming this year shows a discernible shift in attention, away from the single hero object and toward the conditions that determine whether any of these objects scale beyond a prototype. Research institutes, specification directories, workshops and exhibitions sit alongside each other, with the cumulative effect being a field that’s growing in public.
Repair and reuse cross into architecture and policy
Repair, until recently, has largely been the territory of craft and small-batch practitioners, held by makers and mending circles rather than by architects and regulators. This year’s program shows it crossing into both, while a wider architectural cluster around adaptive reuse is extending the embodied-carbon argument into the building stock that already exists.

Waste, reframed as resource
A cluster of shows takes waste not as a problem to be managed but as a category meant to be designed out of existence. Each takes a different angle on the same underlying proposition – that the by-product of one practice can become the substrate for another, that surplus is a failure of imagination rather than an inevitability of production, and that the materials already in circulation are usually more interesting than the ones still being extracted. The vocabulary of waste-as-resource has been around long enough that it risks settling into slogan, which is why it’s most inspiring to see it in action.

Regeneration, regulation and the longer view
The most ambitious conversations are the ones trying to widen the time horizon. By moving past the immediate questions of what to build with and how to build less wastefully, and into the harder territory of what cities might look like under regenerative logic, what an industrialised future of design might actually mean for material flows, and what happens to the language of sustainability itself once the field has been speaking it long enough that the words begin to lose their grip.
