At Casa Plaj, a holiday residence in Portugal, the defining feature is a lime render skin that coats the building inside and out. The designers, Extrastudio, have wrapped the small holiday house in a terracotta-coloured lime render that not only gives the architecture its distinctive tint, but simultaneously sets the buildings presence in the landscape.
The hand-worked finish carries a fine, irregular grain that catches light across the day, shifting from soft coral at dawn to deeper umber by late afternoon. Up close, you read the depth and texture as a handmade gesture.
Lime is a natural material with a vapour-permeable, hygroscopic finish, it helps the envelope breathe, moderating interior humidity and reducing surface condensation, which is particularly useful in a coastal climate. Its mineral pigments deliver colour without the plasticky sheen of acrylic coats, and the slight elasticity of lime accommodates hairline movement. The choice is aesthetic and practical: a warm, earth-toned shell with the durability that holiday houses need.
The massing of Casa Plaj stays deliberately simple, allowing the simplicity of the render and form to read at a strong volume. A single-storey, gabled form is raised on four load-bearing concrete walls, creating a light touch on the ground and allowing the terrain to pass beneath cantilevered terraces.
The plan organises itself along this calm line: living, dining and kitchen to the south, three bedrooms to the north, all on one level. A slatted timber gate hides a small entrance court. Once inside, deep-set openings frame long views and draw air through the rooms. When the sliding glass fully retracts, the rendered envelope reads as a continuous, protective edge.
Light is handled with simple precision. An ocular skylight allows daylight into the living area. Inside, the earthen tone of the lime softens to grey. Underfoot, smooth concrete floors and a pared-back joinery palette communicate a subdued, restorative space.
Casa Plaj is not a house looking for attention, but rather expresses its character through a single, well-chosen material. The lime render gives it colour, climate sense and ease.
